Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War (エースコンバット5 ジ・アンサング・ウォー Ēsu Konbatto Faibu Ji Ansangu Wō?), released in the PAL region as Ace Combat: Squadron Leader, is a semi-realistic flight combat video game for the PlayStation 2. Like other titles in Namco‘s Ace Combat series, Ace Combat 5 features gameplay that is a mix between arcade flight and authentic flight simulation. The game was developed by Project Aces, an internal Namco group credited with the development of the Ace Combat series, and was published by Namco in October 2004. A limited number of the games were bundled with the Hori Flightstick 2 accessory.

Ace Combat 5 features more than fifty licensed real-world jet aircraft. Nonetheless, the game’s events and locations are set in a fictional world. The game’s main campaign is set during a war between the fictitious nations of Osea and Yuktobania. The storyline revolves around the player character “Blaze,” an Osean fighter pilot who leads a four-plane unit known as Wardog Squadron. The Unsung War follows this squadron’s exploits as they attempt to ward off the Yuktobanian invasion of their homeland and uncover the truth about the war.

Although a majority of the gameplay in Ace Combat 5 remains similar to that of its predecessor, Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, several notable additions were made. Among these additions are an arcade mode and the ability for the player to interact with wingmen. The multiplayer mode present in previous titles, however, was scrapped during development. The game has received generally favorable reviews, although critics note that the game is not the “revolutionary step forward for the series” that Shattered Skies was.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ace Combat is a hybrid arcade-simulation flight action video game series featuring 12 games, published by the Japanese company Namco Bandai Games. The series emphasizes fast-paced action and dramatic plots, and has established itself as one of the most successful arcade flight action franchises.

Most games of the series take place in the same fictionalized world populated with fictional countries with details loosely based on real-life location, events, and wars. One of the main selling points of the series is the ability to pilot a range of aircraft that include accurate or slightly modified representations of present day military aircraft, prototypes that never saw actual battle, and completely fictional boss-type superweapons. Longtime fans of the series are rewarded with small hints of the continuity between the games, as some characters and events are referenced from one game to another.

The first three titles were released on Sony’s PlayStation platform, while three subsequent titles were released on the PlayStation 2 (Ace Combat 4, Ace Combat 5 and Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War). One title, Ace Combat X, was released on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) platform, while another title, Ace Combat 6, was released on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform. Ace Combat Xi was released on Apple Inc.’s iOS in 2009, while Ace Combat: Joint Assault was released for the PlayStation Portable in August 2010. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon was launched on October 11th, 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Namco Bandai has also announced to press that it’s working on a new Ace Combat title for the Nintendo 3DS, which has been revealed to be Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy.
