Veterans called to sign a patch of history

The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan is a Canadian achievement at which Tom Hinderks still marvels.

When the Second World War began, Canada had five air bases. By the end of the war less than six years later, 231 training bases existed where 130,000 air crew from 15 countries had been trained, said Hinderks, executive director of the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton.

ALBERTA AVIATION MUSEUM – Remembrance Memorial

I got the pleasure of meeting Willy Williams today after shooting my monthly newsletter. I thought this would be good to show the world. Willy not only did this, but later gave me an entire tour of the Museum, introduced me to some of the hard working volunteers, and even got me coffee. Thanks for the great time Willy.

Canada Above & Beyond – Trailer

Now available on DVDCanada Above And Beyond.

Canadas conquest of the skies began at an elevation of under nine metres. On February 23, 1909, the Silver Dart made the first powered flight in the countrys history, over a distance of 800 metres.

One hundred years later, a replica of this legendary plane took flight over the very same frozen surface of Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia. The event kicked off the Canadian Centennial of Flight celebrations, which continued throughout the year from coast to coast to coast.

The story of Canadian aviation is filled with passion, courage and sacrifice. Beginning in the fall of 2009, CBC and Radio-Canada will broadcast Canada Above and Beyond, a 4-part documentary series that spotlights the men and women who went “above and beyond” to pursue a pure and simple passion: taking to the skies.
